Chase & Status feat Deliliah – Time (Run Riot Remix)

I’ve been really enjoying the new stuff from Chase & Status’s new album No More Idols. ‘Blind Faith’ is still one of my tunes of the year. Saul and Will have tapped into the cross over appeal of D&B, dubstep and house to produce a brilliant, varied album, that’s been pretty much on repeat since its release

Run Riot has jumped in with a great remix of Time, whumping it up and adding a new level of kick ass to the original. Nice job.

Jamie’s Getting Porky

Art by Ron English

Just a quick catch up with what’s going on in the SS enclosure as I laze about, on this piss wet Sunday afternoon. I’ve just got back from a potato fair and if you’ve never been to one (I’m guessing you haven’t) then, to be honest, you’re not missing a whole lot. Apart from lots of spuds and a mass of people who have an unusual obsession with them. My interest is fleeting, in that I grow and eat them, but I do admire enthusiasm, so I can’t help but love the whole funny, obscure crowd.

To the music.

Cosmic Kids – Reginalds Groove

Reginald’s Groove is a low key house affair, that would sound great at a pool party. Just as the sun goes down and things start to warm up a bit. The LA based duo will be releasing this as a debut on April 4th, through Throne of Blood, including remixes from Classixx and Juan Maclean.

It’s no secret that Squeaky Sneaker loves The Subs. They consistently release storming electro bombs that have me dancing round like an electrocuted scarecrow. I can’t think of one of their remixes or tracks that hasn’t been a stone killer. So you can imagine how excited I am to feature the first single off their upcoming album Decontrol, due for release on the 7th March. They’ve welded the whole single package together into a very palatable minimix, featuring, in order, remixes from Gtronic, Clouds, Style Of Eye, Ado’s Scratch And Snuff Mix, Ado’s NORP Mix, Tai and the Parametic Remix.

The Subs – The Face of the Planet Minimix

Finishing off this holy Sunday trinity is a cracking new remix from Run Riot. Here he reworks Dem Slackers ‘Swagger’ into a bass heavy juggernaut, smashing through the gloom to light up a dreary old day.

If you’ve got a minute to spare, get over to Breakspoll and vote Tom Run Riot as best new producer.

Couple of big tunes from two UK labels today.

I featured THaF records just the other day (check the tag), but they’re releasing stuff at a frantic rate at the moment, so they’re getting another mention. This new one from Germany’s JSK, released today has got some of the dirtiest bass I’ve ever heard. Get this going in your cans and your head will be humming within seconds. The search for the mythical ‘brown noise’ takes a step in the right direction. The ETC ETC remix of ‘Skankah’ has been featured on Kissy Sell Outs late night Radio One show and is getting love from one of the masters of bass himself Figure.

JSK – Skankah

You can get hold of Skankah here here and here. You can also check out more JSK on his Soundcloud

EDIT -

From JSK:

If you buy this track, provide a screenshot to dennisjosek@googlemail.com and you can chose two tracks from my Beatport page (originals or JSK remixes only), which I will then send you for free!

Sounds like a deal to me – go, go, go

Next up, some tasty breaks from We Are Live records. Dansor hails from Holland and according to her bio, she’s ranged across a number of genres, tech house, minimal, electro, breaks and techno. The bottle stopped spinning on breaks with ‘Guitar Hero’ and very pleased I am about it. This is clever breaks, Dansor drawing from the range of styles mentioned earlier to compose a restrained, punchy track, that utilises sounds you don’t usually find in a ‘breaks tune’. It fits in perfectly with WALs promise that they will stretch the genre boundarys and feature artists from right across the dance spectrum. Top stuff. The package features remixes from What Now? Domino and SAS.

As a bonus here’s the Run Riot remix for download. In which our hero keeps all the interesting stuff and hones it into a driving dance beast.

Some breaks tonight, I think. First up is a new release on We Are Alive from Run Riot. He’s back to his breaksy best on this one, offering up two choice cuts for you edification. Both of these will give any dance floor, anywhere on the planet, in any solar system a good hammering. They make me wish I could DJ.

Run Riot – The Life/Rockin To The Massive

Out to buy on December 27th on We Are Live

It was Tom Run Riot that put me onto Great Scott and I’m obviously eternally grateful to him for that. A bit like Run Riot, ‘Great’ Scott Novich isn’t getting tied up with genres, getting dumped in a pigeon hole. You’ll find him going all over the place with his production, dubstep, breaks, trip hop, even a bit of chill out. I don’t even know what jerk step is, but he does some and it’s good. I like that producers are stretching themselves and I think that this year has seen more of them doing it. Livens things up a bit.

Run Riot

Don’t seem to have heard much from Tom Run Riot recently. That might be just a relative quietness, as he’s been very prolific, or it could be that he’s become a soldier of fortune and is off fighting in the African bush. Or he’s become Roy Keane’s anger management coach at Ipswich. I might have got those two confused.

He’s back now anyway and with a couple of biggies.

I think I may have mentioned before that I’m not a huge fan of Tiesto. I’ve got nothing against him or his particular scene, I just don’t feel what he’s doing most of the time. I probably heard ‘Knock You Out’ when it was released and went ‘puh’ or ‘tsk’ and turned it off after 30 seconds. It’s a bit – nothing really. I’m sure it kicks ass in a Big Room somewhere, but on my cans it does nothing for me.

Add a touch of Run Riot magic and you’ve got something much more interesting. Take the vocal, which is the best bit of the original to be honest, and stretch it over a nice dubstep and I can listen to it again and again.

Tiesto – Knock You Out (Run Riot Remix)

I’ve never been asked to remix anyone, never mind anyone of any renown. I can’t imagine what it’s like when a ‘Name’ comes to you asking for you to rework one of their tunes. I imagine I’d crap myself and get horribly self conscious, then make a load of excuses and miss the deadline. This is why I write shit and don’t produce music.

Not Tom though, straight in there, stamping his mark over this Moguai tune and making it his own. I like Moguai and I’ve got to say I was interested to see what he’d do with this. He keeps pretty close to the original, laying what I like to call the Run Riot Throb (does that sound dodgy? It’s the best I can come up with) over it and giving it a push forward, stretching the breakdown out, then dropping it down nicely – with Mel & Kim giving it some along the way.

Moguai – Get Fresh (Run Riot Remix)

Is it just me, or does the original echo Faithless ‘Feelin’ Good’ somewhat? No, just me? Righto…

A Quicky?

Just a quicky, catching up with some things I’ve missed.

First up is a new live vid from Run Riot, filmed at Solfest, where he appeared alongside New Young Pony Club, The Japanese Popstars, Utah Saints (U-U-Utah Saints), Adam Freeland and Far Too Loud. It features his new tune ‘The Life’ which he plans to release some time in December this year.Great to see the crowd so into this. Wish I’d been there.

Beat Assassins have been around since 2006 and have drifted by me, in the periphary, as often happens with me and tunes. Their 2007 track ‘We Run Things’ is actually on my I-pod and apparently has been played fifteen times. If you’d asked me who did it though, I’d have coughed, embarrassed, and tried to change the subject.

Now they’re giving away part 4 of their Urban Electro Project, which essentially grabs the lyric from ‘Lions Den’, that Miss Dynamite perfomed with the Nextmen and pastes it over the Assassin’s own ‘Straight To The World’, but it works well. This is the Peo de Pitte remix. Grab it here (well, down there…)

All Out…

Strikes and boycotting are akin to war, and can be justified only on grounds analogous to those which justify war, viz., intolerable injustice and oppression. Rutherford Hayes

There’s trouble brewing. The big unions have voted unanimously today to mass national walkouts to stop or dilute the Governments planned cuts in public service. More power to them, I reckon. They tell us that we’ve had it good for years and that now we have to tighten our belts and take the bad times and the cuts to services that entails. I’m sorry but that’s shit. The majority of working people in this country haven’t seen the good times, just heard about what a good time the very wealthy were having. Now the very wealthy have gone and fucked everything up,  they expect us to pay for it. The banks, who were at the the heart of the crisis, are back to making silly money and are talking about handing out bonuses again, executives are recieving bonuses of 100% their salary, while we face a 25% cut in the public purse. That means less money for the poorest in society, less money on schools and hospitals. We can’t tax the richest, because that might harm the economy. Eh? That’s pretty much the most fucked up thing I’ve heard. Someone on the radio today said that if they went after the tax dodgers, the really rich ones with accountants that hide their money so they don’t have to pay their share, we could raise 100 billion! That would fill a pretty big hole in the countrys finances, eh? But they won’t do that, because…why can’t they do it? I don’t know. They never answer that question, so we assume that nothing can be done. The same way we assume all politicians are liars and that the rich have an inalienable right to do what the hell they like and so we do nothing about it. Honestly I’ve had enough of the bullshit.

‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!!’

Go on, lean out of your window and scream it loud…

But before you do, have a listen to these -

Familjen – Det Var Jag (Savage Skulls & Marcus Price Remix)

Next is a new remix by Run Riot of Curl and Deans ‘Bantha”. Tom himself say’s he got ‘epic’ with this one and the last three minutes are pure class and go to show the mans versatility. Every mix he does is different, always trying to move it forward. That’s why we keep posting his stuff, innit?

Don’t forget - POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

Break Step?

I’ve got to be honest, I don’t like Dubstep. It just drops the wrong way for me. I appreciate a nice wonky bass as much as the next man, but dub of any kind hasn’t touched me much since I used to smoke shit loads of weed. It’s similar to Minimal, I’ve really really tried to like it, but it just ain’t happening (ok, I didn’t try that hard with Minimal). I like a bit of Rusko, some Caspa and I quite enjoy some Skream, but I couldn’t listen to it for any period of time. When you’re taking me up in a track, I don’t want to drop down into a big pile of squelch…

If anyone can set an electro boy straight here, I’m open to any suggestions.

Now, Run Riot has been venturing into the realms of dub lately. I read it on his Twitter and I’m thinking ‘oh no, dude, don’t do it’. Stay with us!! There’s a few producers out there, electro and breaks, who are dabbling with dubstep. There’s a derf of good ‘lectro about and breaks is in the doldrums at the mo, in my opinion, so perhaps it’s a need to stretch out that’s seeing them trying something new. Dub electo? too different, bit like Oooh and Ahhh. Dub breaks – there’s more potential in that.

So lets leave it to Run Riot to give it a go. Here’s one he made earlier – Great Scott’s ‘Defcon (Run Riot remix)

Is it me, or is he onto something here? Hmm, I wonder…Get it here

Also got this remix of Christoph Maitland ‘Electric Finger’that he sent over. Back to breaks, with an acid flourish.
