A month after the release of Collaborations 1/2, featuring Etienne de Crécy, John Roman, Shinichi Osawa and Hoshina Anniversary, The Subs are back with the second installment. Once again their choice of collaborators is faultless, with Alex Gopher and Zombie Nation drafted in, along with upcoming Belgian talent Blatan providing a fittingly heavy, chaotic finale. Release date October 7th.
This remix from The Subs really isn’t what I was expecting. Ninety percent of the time, a remix from the Belgian electro meisters will give you a crafty dig in the guts, then remorselessly hammer your head into the ground. Not so with this rework of Rebotini’s ‘Another Time, Another Place’, which is subtle beyond belief, but no less ace for their lighter touch. Starting at a shuffle, then gradually building, a little acid bubbling, you’re waiting for the cacophony, the massive drop into craziness that never arrives, but you really won’t mind.
Rebotini – Another Time, Another Place (The Subs Remix)
The EP ‘Another Time, Another Place’ is out on November 7th
It’s a bank holiday here in the UK, which means a day off from work and inevitable rain. Not sure how bank holidays came about, but considering the obvious over-reaching power of financial institutions I like to imagine they just flopped a Playboy calender on to the Prime Ministers desk one day and red ringed a few random dates. They’ll no doubt start charging us for them soon.
Thanks to the banks though, I get a chance to post at 8.45am, so here’s a new mix from The Subs to make the rain go away.

Just a quick catch up with what’s going on in the SS enclosure as I laze about, on this piss wet Sunday afternoon. I’ve just got back from a potato fair and if you’ve never been to one (I’m guessing you haven’t) then, to be honest, you’re not missing a whole lot. Apart from lots of spuds and a mass of people who have an unusual obsession with them. My interest is fleeting, in that I grow and eat them, but I do admire enthusiasm, so I can’t help but love the whole funny, obscure crowd.
To the music.
Cosmic Kids – Reginalds Groove
Reginald’s Groove is a low key house affair, that would sound great at a pool party. Just as the sun goes down and things start to warm up a bit. The LA based duo will be releasing this as a debut on April 4th, through Throne of Blood, including remixes from Classixx and Juan Maclean.
It’s no secret that Squeaky Sneaker loves The Subs. They consistently release storming electro bombs that have me dancing round like an electrocuted scarecrow. I can’t think of one of their remixes or tracks that hasn’t been a stone killer. So you can imagine how excited I am to feature the first single off their upcoming album Decontrol, due for release on the 7th March. They’ve welded the whole single package together into a very palatable minimix, featuring, in order, remixes from Gtronic, Clouds, Style Of Eye, Ado’s Scratch And Snuff Mix, Ado’s NORP Mix, Tai and the Parametic Remix.
The Subs – The Face of the Planet Minimix
Finishing off this holy Sunday trinity is a cracking new remix from Run Riot. Here he reworks Dem Slackers ‘Swagger’ into a bass heavy juggernaut, smashing through the gloom to light up a dreary old day.
Dem Slackers – Swagger (Run Riot Remix)
If you’ve got a minute to spare, get over to Breakspoll and vote Tom Run Riot as best new producer.
Two relatively new kids on the block to liven up this lazy Sunday afternoon.
First up are The Hats, from Jersey, signed up to THaF Records. They make the sort of electro house that hits me in all the right places. It goes where it’s meant to and does the trick nicely. To be honest I miss these sort of beats. Electro is swiftly becoming synonimous with ‘shit’ and it’s nice to have something decent dropping for once.
The Press Play EP is out now. Also have a listen to The Hats rather nice remix of Lipps Inc’s ‘Funky Town’.
Next is Clouds who hail from over the border in Scotland and are attached to Fake Blood’s new label, Blood Music. They released Liquid as a single last month (buy it here) it also inclouded Mauful Sir, which you can listen to below
Clouds – Mauful Sir
Proxy – 8000 (Clouds Remix)
The Subs new mix is out and here it is – really glad they’ve included the Siriusimo track – topper
Sometimes music is very visual. As you’re listening to it, it conjures up pictures in your head, takes you to another place.
With ‘Death of Joshua’ from Figure I’m on a rattling rollercoaster, at the bottom of a shaking ascent, rising impossibly, hearing the bolts and rails straining beneath rusting wheels. You reach the summit at about .57 secs, then it’s off down into a baseline descent, flinging you about and pummeling the sense out of you.
I love rollercoasters.
I’m sure this isn’t what Figure had in mind. I’m sure it was more about creating a monster drop to send dance floors nuts, but you know, musics all subjective. The EP out on We Are Live Records is dead good and you can get it here, here and here
The Subs are my second favourite Belgians. You can grab their latest mix below. Monster monster
