Various Cruelties have recorded a cover of Ian Brown’s ‘F.E.A.R’, which they’ve been including in their live sets recently . There’s a guitar solo in it, that scared the holy shit out of me, but that’s testament to the fact that I was nicely lulled by the fidelity of their version and wasn’t really expecting a guitar solo. Good stuff.
The cover will be the B-side to the bands next single ‘Chemicals’ which is due out imminently.
A while back I wrote about how ‘Chemicals’ was VC’s sing it back at them moment. Here, to prove that I am generally right about most things, is a nice clip of them playing it live at the Leed’s Cockpit.

Always avoided lists, but this year I’ve decided to feature twenty of my favourite tunes from 2011. All that’s required is that they were released this year and I found myself going to back to them again and again. It’s a strange mix, but then there’s no accounting for taste. As the title suggests, the tracks listed aren’t in any particular order, just as I remember them.
I’ll see you in the New Year x

Various Cruelties have just announced that their new single ‘Great Unknown’ will be released on New Years Day 2012. This is a slower affair than previous release ‘Chemicals’, chugging into a rousing harmonised chorus. Get your lighers in the air etc

I posted Various Cruelties at the start of the year, with the release of ‘If It Wasn’t For You’. They’re back again with new single ‘Chemicals’ to be released on the 3rd October. Love the vibe, love the Alex Turner-esque vocal and love that I can imagine being in the crowd singing this right back at them. Every band needs a singalong moment, this is Various Cruelties right here.

Check out the band performing it live earlier this year and remind yourself not to sing along when you’re filming a gig.
One thing I miss these days is some geetar based indy tunes. There’s a glut of it at the moment and while I love synth, basslines and 303, it’s nice to have a bit of jangle jangle now and then.
Various Cruelties are four fellas from London who are filling my indy yearning right now. They formed last year and have been support to, most notably for me at least, the other indy saviours The Vaccines (also Mumford & Sons, but I swore they would never ever get a mention on this blog. Thats not a mention, back there, because this is bracketed, so doesn’t count).
Cold As You Are rolls in with rousing drums, then the horns hit and you’re in Northern Soul terrority, while If It Wasn’t For You (below) brings to mind the Artic Monkeys, vocally at least. You can catch them out and about:
